Predynastic Wavy-Handled Jar. A predynastic wavy-handled jar in fired marl fabric. The body is of ovoid shape with a restricted short neck and everted rim; the base is flattened. Wavy handles are present on both shoulders as is usual for the type. This vessel type is a key piece in Petrie’s chronology of vessel development. H 18,5 cm. Provenance: Reputedly excavated in the 1940s at Abydos. Cracked and worn with small rim sherd missing. Nagada II, ca 3500 BC. (M1577). Acquired from a US collection in 2008. Sales Description stated: “Released from Muhlenberg Anthropological Museum in 1999. Abydos. Excavated in mid-1940s”. Seller wrote: “Museum has been closed for over a decade, and was a small repository of artifacts donated to a small liberal arts college in PA.
