Coffin fragments Third Intermediate Period 21st Dynasty (2)

Coffin Fragment: Panel with Wadjet Cobra. Third Intermediate Period, 21st Dynasty. Probably Thebes. Total length: 48 cm. Wood planks with polychrome decoration over gesso. Two fragments of wood plank from the back panel of an anthropomorphic coffin from the 21st Dynasty. The two pieces join and are decorated on what would have been the inside of the coffin. The background is russet and spotted with stars painted in white that are very similar to stick-figures of men. The remains of a female clenched fist holding a large ankh sign descends from the top and was originally connected to a figure of the sky goddess covering the back of the coffin. Below the ankh sign, the cobra Wadjet is shown facing right. The snake is held by two hands coming in from the left and grasping a meander of the snake well below the hooded head. These details are in polychrome, some of which is also covered in a yellow varnish. Such star-speckled backboards are common during the TIP, although no other examples h
