Jewelry box New Kingdom

Jewelry box New Kingdom

A reconstruction of a New Kingdom jewelry box with original decoration consisting of bone strips in seven lengths, with a strip of metal, probably base gold or electrum from the same box (use unknown). Reputedly from a Theban tomb. When discovered some 90 years ago, the wooden box had decayed away. The remaining bone strips are decorated with a circle and dot pattern within lines. Several bone strips cracked. The original bone decorations are pegged in place with wooden pegs, through the original mounting holes. The box contains samples of ancient Egyptian linen fabrics. This object, although largely reconstructed, is the perfect piece on which to exhibit ancient jewelry. An exact parallel can be seen at Lord Carnarvon´s Museum at Highclere, recently exhibited at the B.M. and published in the Exhibition pamphlet. See also Museum of Fine Arts Boston 1982.
