Green Faience Tile from Djoser’s Pyramid at Saqqara (M). Old Kingdom, 3rd Dynasty, reign of Djoser. Length: 60 mm, Width: 39 mm, Thickness: 11 mm. Aquired: Richard Gill (Eternal Egypt) 1994. See also Phillips Cat. 6/12-94 lot 84. A slightly domed rectangular blue-green faience tile from the subterranean chambers of the Step Pyramid at Saqqara. The walls of these chambers were covered with these tiles which, when combined, looked like wall-mats made of bound papyrus stems. They were fastened into the stucco by means of the suspension hole which goes from side to side on the back of the tile. Intact besides minor chip to attachment hole on reverse.
