Thoeris Figurine & Cosmetic Jar. 1. (M1305) A fragmentary statuette in fine apple green faience, depicting the hippopotamus goddess Thoeris shown striding forth. The head, as well as the lower feet and base are all broken away and missing. The left arm is held slightly forward along the side with fist missing: the right hand is placed upon the breast. The back of the figure is shows the tail of a crocodile. Late Period (Saite Period), 26th Dynasty. H 5 cm. Aquired at Medusa Art, NY 2002. 2. (M355) A fragmentary cosmetic kohl jar in limestone engraved with a figure of Thoeris and remains of the monkey statuette which originally held the jar. Remains of kohl on inside. The image of Thoeris is a true caricature, where the artist is having fun exaggerating her attributes; such imagery is very unusual. New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty.
