The text records the conversation between three gentlemen: the Dutch Mr. Wurtzheim, the English Mr. Thincker, and the French Mr. L'Ebhai (= Mr. Amazement) during and after dinner at the country house of the latter. Mr. Wurtzheim gives an account of his life and journeys to the Far East, especially Japan, and the other two comments upon his stories.
